Obituary for Clarence Harold Winfree

Clarence Winfree, 98, of Warren, Michigan passed away on May 19, 2023.

He was born August 11, 1924 in Baxter, TN, to the late Homer and Stocia Winfree.

His life was defined by his love of, and service to, his family and his country.
He is survived by Lela (Murphy), his beloved wife of 73 years, sons David and Richard, daughter Nancy, six grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by granddaughter Cory (Marquise).
Genealogy and family history held a special place in his heart and, together with Lela, they extensively documented the family history all the way back to arrival at Jamestown in the early 1600’s.

Clarence served as a B-24 Bomber Pilot in WW2, remaining in the Army Air Force for a total of 6 years. After active service, he received his Engineering degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, then went on to spend his entire career at the Detroit Warren Tank Arsenal, helping to lead the engineering and design teams responsible for the “Arsenal of Democracy”, where he was awarded multiple design patents.

Visitation will be at Presley Funeral Home in Cookeville, TN, Tuesday May 30, from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM, with funeral services immediately after and interment in Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Cookeville, TN.
